Wuhan Institute of Shipbuilding Technology, founded in 1950, is administrated by the People’s Government of Hubei Province. It has enjoyed a good reputation both at home and abroad as a National Model of Higher Vocational Colleges, an Excellent Higher Vocational College, and one of the 56 National Construction Units of High-Level Higher Vocational Colleges with Chinese Characteristics.

Over 70 years Wuhan Institute of Shipbuilding Technology (WIST) has cultivated more than 100,000 talents covering a variety of fields. WIST enrolls students nationwide and countries along the "the Belt and Road". At present there are 15,000 full-time students on campus. WIST actively explores the integration of localization and re-internationalization, innovates and adapts to the talent training system and mechanism serving the countries along the "Maritime Silk Road" to engage in international production capacity cooperation in shipbuilding, ocean transportation and other fields, and forms an international exchange and cooperation model of two-way improvement of "bringing in" and "going abroad" with high-quality vocational education resources. WIST has developed its own sample of vocational education opening up to the world --- "sailing with ships alongside the Maritime Silk Road". One overseas branch school and three overseas training centers have been established. WIST won honorary titles such as one of "China's Top 50 Vocational Colleges in the World Competitiveness", "Vocational Education International Cooperation and Exchange Model College", and "China ASEAN Vocational Colleges Characteristic Cooperation Project".

At present, in WIST there are 50 specialties in 9 schools, among which are School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Transportation Engineering, School of Ship and Ocean Engineering, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, School of Economics and Management, School of Construction Engineering and Design, School of Computer Information Technology, School of Business and Trade, and so on. Among the specialties, there are two national key construction specialty groups, 17 national specialties, and 25 provincial excellent (characteristic) specialties and key specialties. WIST has developed one national training base for most needed skilled talents, and one national training base for seafarers, together with 6 national quality courses, 5 national sharing courses of quality resources, 25 provincial quality courses, one national repository of vocational education, and one of the first pilot projects of excellent educational informatization approved by the Ministry of Education.

WIST has highly competent faculty with high quality and reasonable structure. A large number of the teachers are double qualified. Among them is one teacher of achievement of the national "Ten Thousand Talents Plan", one national excellent educator, one national excellent teacher, three notable teachers of achievement of Hubei Province, one outstanding individual of Teachers' Ethics Project (Hubei), two excellent teachers in Jingchu Program and 20 famous part-time teachers who are Chutian notable craftsmen. What’s more, WIST has built one national team of vocational education teaching & innovation, three national teaching teams, five provincial teaching teams, and five Hubei notable teacher (craftsman) workshops.

WIST has established 20 comprehensive training bases on campus, including machinery manufacturing technology centers, turbine centers, mechatronics centers, computer information network centers, and business centers, etc.. In these bases the 108 training rooms feature many advanced facilities and perfect functions, such as ship construction, ship engine room simulation, numerical control processing, electromechanical production line, computer network technology, cooling and heating air conditioning, hotel management and so on. Among them are six training rooms as the key construction projects funded by the Ministry of Finance.
